Our commitment

We are committed to providing a healthy and safe working environment for all our employees and others affected by our activities; including customers, visitors and the public at large. Health and safety is a strategic aspect of our business and ranks alongside other facets including care of the environment, quality, customer service and the interests of our stakeholders.

We discharge our commitment by:

  • Providing adequate control of the health and safety risks arising from our work activities.
  • Consulting with our employees on matters affecting their health and safety.
  • Providing and maintaining a safe working environment including plant and equipment.
  • Ensuring safe handling and use of substances.
  • Providing information, instruction, training and supervision for all employees commensurate with the tasks which they perform.

Our objectives

  • We comply with those statutory health and safety requirements that impact our business and often we aim to exceed them.
  • We operate a Health and Safety Management system which meets the OHSAS 18001 standard.
  • We aim to continually improve our health and safety performance, and to do this:-
  • We have a Plan in place to ensure that areas for improvement are identified and prioritised.
  • We investigate incidents to ensure that learning opportunities are maximised.
  • We involve our employees in Risk Assessments and in developing safe systems of work.
  • We recognise positive health and safety performance.
  • We measure and analyse health and safety performance and make the results available to our employees.
  • We train our managers to enable them to provide visible safety leadership.
  • We require our contractors to operate to the same standards as we do.


  • The CEO together with the Leadership Team are responsible for providing health and safety leadership.
  • The CEO and the Leadership Team ensure that their decisions reflect this Policy Statement.
  • The Director, Safety, Legal and Corporate Services ensures that the CEO and the Leadership Team are kept informed of relevant health and safety issues.
  • All employees have a legal responsibility in respect of their own safety and that of their work colleagues, and also to co-operate with their employer in safety matters.
  • Detailed health and safety responsibilities are contained within job statements, Company Standards and procedures. Further details of the Health and Safety Management system are found in the Biffa Management System Manual.
